City Council Bill Would Provide Free Divorce Lawyers to Victims of Domestic Violence

Having equal representation in the legal arena is essential. And when it comes to something as personal as divorce, it is even more important. Far too many victims of domestic violence have gone unrepresented in the court system throughout the years, often being unempowered both emotionally and financially, with the abuser pulling all the strings. While Collaborative divorce is a fantastic vehicle to help couples settle their disputes amicably, it is not the right process for everyone; including relationships that are plagued by domestic violence. Kudos to Brooklyn for this initiative and for assisting those who are caught up in this power dynamic, to gain access to legal advocacy during divorce.
